AEO agency vs AEO tool. Two different products.
What tools are for.
Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Scrunch AI, Rankscale, and the AEO features in Semrush and Ahrefs are all monitoring products. They query AI engines for a defined prompt set on a schedule and produce a dashboard showing appearance and citation trends. Some track sentiment. Most track competitor visibility.
Tools work well when:
- You already know what you are optimizing and want to watch it move
- You have executive reporting needs (a dashboard is easier to share than a document)
- You have a marketing team large enough to interpret trends and act on them
- You want to catch competitor moves quickly
Tools do not work well as a starting point. A dashboard showing "you have 8% appearance share" without explaining why or what to do about it produces motion, not progress. This is the pattern we see repeatedly at Hint Co.: a company subscribed to a monitoring tool for six months, watched the number stay flat, then hired an agency to figure out why.
What agencies are for.
AEO agencies range from Semrush's professional services on the enterprise end to solo consultants like The Hint Co. on the productized end. What they share is that the deliverable is a written diagnosis and a fix list, not a dashboard. The output is:
- Where you appear and where you do not
- Which competitors are winning the queries you should be winning
- The specific gaps in retrieval, recommendation, and sentiment
- A prioritized fix list with sequencing
- Usually, an implementation plan or execution
Agencies work well when you do not yet know what your AEO problem actually is, or when you know but have not decided what to prioritize.
What The Hint Co. is.
The Hint Co. is a productized agency with three products. The audit is free and public: a category benchmark that measures every named vendor. The read translates a Hint Co. audit into a written fix list in a 60-90 minute working session. The pilot is a 30-day paid ChatGPT Ads test for cases where organic AEO takes 6-12 months and paid distribution is the honest bridge.
None of these are dashboards. If you need ongoing monitoring, we recommend Peec AI or Profound depending on team size, and often run them alongside a Hint Co. audit.
Buy order that usually works.
- Free audit first. Read the Hint Co. case file for your category, or one of the adjacent ones. If your category is not published yet, request it as a right-of-reply audit.
- Read second. If the audit shows a problem worth fixing (usually: appearance under 15%, or pick share under 5%, or an active unfavorable pattern), the read produces the fix list.
- Tool third. Once you have decided what to fix and started fixing it, a monitoring tool tracks whether the work is landing. Buying a tool before you know what to watch is usually premature.
- Pilot when the timeline requires paid. If the fix list says "this takes 6-12 months to close organically" and you cannot wait, the pilot buys attention time.
Companies that reverse this order (tool first, agency second) usually spend more and learn slower.
How to decide today.
If you are reading this and you are unsure whether your company needs a tool or an agency: run a free category audit first. Everything else becomes obvious after that. Request one at /apply.
Want this measured for your category?
Every 30-day pilot at The Hint Co. starts with a full AI visibility audit. Or buy the read on its own if the pilot is not the shape you need. Written by one operator, no agency team, no handoffs.
